Be the Possibility, Be the Lifesaver

Bone Marrow Donation

F O R E W O R D

Donation is an act of giving. We give because we want to do something good and help people in need. Aside from money, donation can be of something that a human is born with, such as organ, and reproductive blood and bone marrow. Among these three donations, bone marrow has a rather low profile and catches less attention. Most people are not aware of bone marrow donation because of lack of knowledge, misconceptions and insufficient promotion.

Blood is the symbol of life, but it cannot exist without bone marrow, which produces all the blood cells. People suffered from blood diseases look forward to new bone marrow, a new life. However, bone marrow depends on matching a patient to a donor with odds as unlikely as one in thousands. So the basic principle is that the more people who are registered as donors, the higher the chance of saving lives.

This project introduces the issues behind bone marrow donation. It tells stories of several leukaemia patients, their companions and donors, about how they got through the illness battle and how they responded to donation. Facing joy, yet sorrow and uncertainty, their perspectives are worth noting.

I had never heard of bone marrow before I started this project. In addition to reporting, I have done something even meaningful and first-ever – blood donation and bone marrow registration – in my life. There is nothing more proud and exciting than being able to save lives.

Each of us can be the matched one, the possibility and the light to someone in the world.
